After nearly two years and more than 220 posts, I will not be writing any more new posts for this blog, "Pack Mule for the New School." The posts, which began in April 2010, will remain published and available, as will the blog I wrote in 2009 and 2010 for my "Patchwork: A Chronicle of Alabama in the New South" project.
"Pack Mule for the New School" is a phrase that came out of a poem that I wrote years ago, and I meant it to describe my the kind of work I do as a writer, editor and teacher. I'm not the kind of person who seeks out infamy or prominent leadership roles; I'm just a guy who does some of the drudge-work of trying to create opportunities, improve cultural understanding, and make things better for as many people as possible. For me, that means writing and editing books about neglected subjects; teaching literature, writing and critical thinking skills to young people; and also working on organizing committees for things ranging from the Montgomery Children's Walk, an event in December 2005 to involve school children in commemorating Rosa Parks' 1955 arrest, to the annual Alabama Book Festival. This blog was part of that work.
While I don't intend to continue writing this blog, my course of work will still continue along the same lines. You can find updates about what I'm doing at http://www.fosterdickson.com. As the movie titles says, Au revoir, les enfants . . .
